What do you see when you look at him?  Of course an adorable, fuzzy-faced pup with soulful eyes that melt your heart.  What you don't see is the trauma, mistrust, pain and fear in his mind and heart.  Ace was abused or neglected or both.  He has been starved, has a broken tail, came into care with ticks, hair loss, and UTI, and has a general mistrust of men in particular.  When fearful, he reacts the only way he knows how — with aggression.  Ace desperately wants affection and to trust humans.  But sometimes the memories of pain win out over his desire to trust.  Ace is beginning his journey to trust again in his foster home.  He seeks out the foster mom's affection, enjoys being near her, allows her to brush and comb him.  Remarkably, Ace is the perfect gentleman in the home.  He must have had a loving home at one time because he knows to potty outdoors and has had no accidents in his foster home.  He knows some commands, has good recall, walks well on a leash, enjoys car rides, is crate trained and will sleep all night long without incident.  He seems to enjoy the company of other dogs, but can be a little impolite when first meeting them as he tends to want to run up to them and smell them right away.  Ace has so many good qualities!  It is a tragedy that some humans caused him to mistrust. Ace had a physical exam and aside from his malnourished state, is in fairly good health.  He currently has an UTI for which he is being treated.  He does have a grade 2-3 heart murmur.  Ace is neutered.  When his treatment for the UTI is finished, Ace will get the remainder of his vaccines.  He will be microchipped before going to his adoptive home. Ace will need a family that understands the long-term affect of abuse and will let Ace progress at his pace.  Ace will absolutely not be placed in a home with children of any age.  A quieter home without lots of people coming and going would be best.  Ace can be an only dog, or perhaps with another low-key dog.  Ace does not like sharing toys or food, so this must be considered if another dog is in the household.   Happy Days Dog and Cat Rescue microchips all dogs and cats before adoption. Microchips are implanted between the shoulder blades and are another form of identification should the animal get lost. The microchips are registered to Happy Days Dog and Cat Rescue. The microchip is transferred to the adopter once the adoption is complete. The adopter is responsible for a one-time $15 microchip enrollment fee.  Microchips are enrolled with AKC Reunite.    Dogs and Cats still need to have collar with tags should they get lost.
