Thank you for your interest in dog who needs a new home.  Adoption can be one of the most fulfilling experiences in your life and especially in the life of your new canine companion. A note to those looking at CPR.  We have no perfect dogs – but many of our dogs have proven to be perfect for a certain someone.  Our job is to find those someone's.  Our most successful adopters come to CPR not because they want a dog.  They come to us because they want to give a dog a home.  We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture.  While we like to know what you like in looks, a dog is more than a pretty face.  Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home.  We want to create furever families.  Our descriptions contain all that we know about this dog today.  We'll update as more information is known.  Are you looking to adopt within the next 30 days?  If so please visit our webpage at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org and complete the application.  You'll find it in the menu on the left hand side.  You'll also find a total listing of all our dogs available.  Just browsing but interested in poodles and poodle mixes?  Please drop a note to applications@carolinapoodlerescue.org with your name, address and phone # and email.  We'll add you to our mailing list. thanks the CPR Adoption team   NOT in VPDate into Rescue: 07/25/2024 Reason for being in rescue: Surrendered by owners who, while they cared for him, are more small dog people Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? Kirby is neutered, up to date on vaccines and heartworm negative. Weight: 80 lbs Height: 26 in Spayed/Neutered: Yes Adoption Fee: $599 Fence needed? Kirby can jump a 4-foot fence, but only if left alone unattended. Stay with him and he's right by your side. He needs the security of a fence 6 feet or taller AND a very active home OR he can go to a fence free home who is very active, committed to lots of walks and runs and off leash exercise in a safe area at least 3 times per week (doggie day care, obedience classes, friends with yards, etc).  What kind of home would be best for me? Kirby is a very large dog who thinks he weighs 20 pounds. He simply loves to give love! Kirby would love another furry friend in the home to keep him company and to entertain him in those moments his human is busy. If you don't have another dog in the home, you need to have a plan for lots of play dates and socialization. This boy needs lots of physical and mental stimulation. Kirby is so young and so smart but has had nothing to do with that energy. He needs a strong, confident owner that is committed to positive reinforcement training and so much physical and mental stimulation every day.  What is my personality like? Kirby is the result of a backyard breeder with a family member who was a small dog lover convinced to take one of her puppies (he's a poodle – what can go wrong!). His previous owner had never had a standard poodle before and wasn't prepared for the amount of physical and mental stimulation this breed needs every day. Without these, his energy can feel like too much. His owners got frustrated when he started jumping the fence and barking out of boredom and took him to a local shelter. Thankfully the shelter stopped the owner at the door, called us, and Kirby arrived in rescue. Kirby, though large, is absolutely a sweetheart, and he simply wants to show everyone just how sweet he is. He loves to give big hugs and thinks he is a lap dog. While it's cute, it can also be overwhelming. We think if you teach Kirby a cue for hugs, he can give them appropriately for he follows direction well.  Then he would be able to give the hugs he loves to give but, on your timeline, and at your pleasure.  He truly loves showing his affection this way! Kirby does know how to sit and is currently working on the 'come' and 'wait' cues with his caregiver. He has shown to be an intensely fast study, especially if treats are in the picture.Kirby takes treats kindly and will gently nibble them from your hand. He responds well to his name or 'ah' when being called off of misbehaviors. Kirby responds well to his human's energy. If you are calm, he is calm. If it is playtime he is up and ready to go in a matter of seconds. The moment all is calm again he will find a comfy spot on the floor and lay down for a well-earned nap.  Kirby has shown to be a young athletic boy. He wants open yards with friends to play in. He would love marathon length walks downtown or around the neighborhood. Doggy daycare a couple of times a week, or playdates in the backyard sounds like a blast to him! Kirby is an impressionable young man and relies on the guidance of others to show him the right behaviors.  How do I act when I first meet new people? Kirby greets newcomers as any young boy. Excited and ready to tell you about all the trips he has ever gone on. Kirby shares himself openly and wears his heart on his paw. He loves a good pat on the head and ruffle of his top knot. He given loves those good firm pats only dads can give! Kirby's tail is always wagging and when he sees someone new its likely to never stop! Other tips and tidbits: Kirby's birthdate is 10/29/2022.  Kirby lived with a child and did well.  We think he would do great with kids over 10 years old.  Younger and smaller children may be intimidated by our big, big boy.   House trained? Kirby is house trained. Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained.  A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. Please note – we do not ship dogs.  If you are interested in adopting, please take a look at the distance between the foster home location and your location and make sure you are willing to make that trip.  Most of our dogs are at our farm in Pacolet, South Carolina.   To apply, please visit our webpage at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org and visit the tab on the left that directions you to the online application. Please note that when screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home.   You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you – poodles or non poodles, color, age, etc.  Others here may be a better fit for you.  It is very difficult to get to know a living animal from a picture and a short description.  Since we are constantly getting in new dogs, this may be a  dog not in our listings yet.  We want you to be very happy with your new companion and will make suggestions based on what you tell us about you. Thank you for considering CPR.
