Critter Details

Dear little Melvin is a very special dove! He was found stray in San Jose, most likely the survivor (barely) of a deadly ‘dove release’. He was found banged up & weak & was very lucky to be taken to an animal shelter on 7/3 but none of the South Bay shelters serve birds so he had to be rescued or euthanized. We squeezed him in to our already overfull foster care & he charmed all who met him. He even wore dove drawers at outreach events. But most amazing of all, he won the heart of my pet dove Lily who, for the past 6 years, has been totally loyal to me as her ‘dove husband’ though I am the world’s worst. No matter what, she would not quit me! She has sat all her eggs all alone (since I don’t fit in the nest) & been courted by lots of incredibly romantic dove suitors but no one could turn her head. Until Melvin. He made friends with her (instead of courting a lot) & just tagged along like a little brother for a few weeks. Soon, he had won her heart & they married. And now Melvin is home!
