Meet Pancake the Bearded Dragon. Pancake came to the SPCA because their owner could no longer care for them. Will you take Pancake home with you? Bearded dragons are curious, docile and friendly creatures. They are able to recognize their owners and will eventually become more relaxed over time. Bearded dragons can tolerate daily handling and can even enjoy perching on their owner's shoulders. It is important that when committing to take care of an exotic animal for the entirety of its life that you are prepared for that commitment. Bearded dragons can live 6-10 years with proper care. Exotic animals require annual vet exams much like a dog or cat. The size of the enclosure depends on the age and size of the bearded dragon. Proper temperatures in the tank are extremely important. As with other reptiles, a temperature gradient should be provided for your bearded dragon, as well as a basking spot. The gradient should go from 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit on the cool side, up to a basking temperature of around 95 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Exposure to UV lighting is extremely important for pet bearded dragons. Bearded dragons should be fed once every 24 hours and can eat a combination of insects and vegetables with an occasional treat.
