Meet Sassy, the 6 month old Belgian Malinois mix. Sassy came to the Shelter after her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. She lived primarily outdoors with her sister Luna (who is also up for adoption at the Shelter). Luna and Sassy sometimes get in squabbles over resources like food, toys and treats so we are looking to rehome them separately. Sassy has met other dogs at the Shelter and seems a little overwhelmed by them. A home with another dog may be a fit after a meet and greet paired with a slow, thoughtful introduction (especially around fun things like toys and treats). We are not recommending Sassy to live in a home with small animals, cats or young children. Adopters for Sassy should do some breed research prior to adoption to make sure they are up for the day to day above average mental and physical stimulation that Sassy will need to be a good canine citizen. She is still learning life skills and manners (like potty training and leash walking) as well as age appropriate socialization. Adopters should plan to bond with Sassy through positive reinforcement based training. Sassy is available for pre-adoption. Come meet her, fall in love and take her home after her spay surgery. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
