He had a rough start, spending most of his first 15 years in a dark basement, and then was surrendered to a pet store, where he was purchased by a good Samaritan. She kept Soki for 10 years and gave him love and good care, but for reasons out of her control, she needed to surrender Soki. Soki is now settling into his foster family, and they are loving getting to know him! Soki loves attention, sings, dances, and likes to play catch with his many toy stuffies. He is starting to allow snuggles, and his fosters think he will be a wonderful lap bird when he finds his forever loving home. He loves it when his foster sister preens his head, and he returns the favor by preening her hair when she holds him.Soki loves his foster mom and sister, but he has started to seek out attention from his foster dad and brother now too. He wasn’t often handled by the man in his last home, and he may still choose a female primary caretaker. We are starting to believe that Soki could be the rare bird that likes his family members regardless of gender. Soki is a typical male Cockatoo, so we will favor an adopter with large bird experience. He can be extremely loud, but isn’t a habitual screamer as many male Umbrella Cockatoos can be. Instead, he typically has a loud period in the evenings, around 6:30-ish, where he engages in the instinctual, rhythmic flock calling, that many birds do. It usually persists for about five minutes, but then subsides, and his bedtime routine with his family can continue. That being said, this would need to be taken into account if there are any important phone conversations that need to happen. That includes Zoom classes, being taken, or same room activities that need to occur. It is not an exaggeration to say you should use a pair of noise canceling headphones or a set of earplugs to ensure no hearing damage occurs. Soki enjoys activities that a typical toddler would enjoy. He likes playing peekaboo, playing with his stuffy babies and toys, and watching Sesame Street and Curious George. After all, cockatoos are very much like super loud toddlers, but they won’t grow up and can live for 60+ years. They can also be very destructive, and destroy woodwork or molding in a mere second. So if you are interested in adopting Soki, make sure your budget can accommodate his love for destroying toys. Soki will only be adopted to a single-family, free-standing home.No exceptions.Soki is a big boy, with a strong beak, and he will not be adopted out to a home with young children, as he could potentially injure them.
